THE SHORT ANSWER

Verify the long-haul seat, fare conditions, lounge eligibility, full passenger count and total cost before paying or transferring points. Then check that the reservation is ticketed. A booking confirmation and an issued ticket are not always the same thing.

Your booking checklist

The checklist is temporary for this page visit. It is not saved to an account. Use your browser’s print function if you want a copy.

The aircraft and seat check

Look at the seat map for the particular flight. Match it to the product you want, then inspect any connection separately. A mixed-cabin itinerary may place only a short feeder flight in business. Save the aircraft version and fare details; recheck after schedule notifications.

Aircraft assignments can change. Do not interpret a screenshot as a promise of compensation or guaranteed service. If a swap occurs, review the airline’s policy and your fare conditions for the available options.

The points-transfer check

Confirm an award for the full group through the program that will issue the ticket. Check cash charges, transfer ratio, increments and expected processing time. Bank-to-airline transfers may be final; a pending transfer does not reserve the seat.

Use a program-authorized hold only if the airline confirms it is available and gives an expiry. After booking, confirm the ticket number and operating airline’s reference. A payment receipt alone is not the end of the process.

The airport and benefits check

Record the departure terminal and which lounge you can enter, with guests counted separately. Check travel-date exceptions, especially where fare benefits change. Count the usable time before boarding and allow for security or terminal movement.

For a religious or dietary requirement, request the airline’s special meal through the booking and confirm the request before departure. A lounge’s food selection is a separate matter; do not assume a suitable meal will be available because the cabin is premium. Bring an appropriate backup within airport and airline rules.

The disruption and cancellation check

Decide what happens if the first flight is late. Separate tickets may leave you responsible for a missed onward journey. Count a positioning flight, hotel and ground transfer in the original budget. Leave realistic time rather than relying on the published minimum connection.

Read whether a cancellation produces cash, travel credit or redeposited miles, and any fees or expiry. Save those terms. If your trip depends on arriving for a fixed event, evaluate replacement options as part of the purchase, not only after a problem.

When should I transfer points?
